Ambassador of the Netherlands in Peru Nathalie Lintvelt said 300 Dutch and 100 European nationals were being flown to Amsterdam.

Many of the individuals were tourists who arrived in Peru to travel to popular destinations such as Machu Picchu.

Peru's President Martin Vizcarra virtually shut down Peru last week, closing hotels, restaurants and the international airport, leaving thousands of international travelers and tourists stranded.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and could lead to death.
