Australia was 'right' to push back against China's economic threat

Australia was 'right' to push back against China's economic threat Australia was "right" to push back against China’s "extraordinary" threat to damage Australia's economy, US Studies Centre’s James Brown says.

Chinese ambassador Cheng Jingye on Monday warned Australia’s export, tourism and education sectors could face a heavy hit from the withdrawal of Chinese interest if the government continued in its push for an inquiry into the handling of coronavirus.

Mr Brown said the warning, especially from the ambassador, was “extraordinary”.

“Let's be clear, this was a direct threat from the Chinese communist party government,” he said.

“Extraordinarily, the ambassador is threatening to do by design what they have already done by negligence - that is destroying our economy, reducing our exports, and declining our services industry.

"So I think the government is right to push back."
