The Notre Dame Folk Choir presents a virtual choir video of Day is Done:
Both of us now find ourselves living by a desolate campus, separated from our communities. In reflecting upon the importance of “Day is Done” in our Folk Choir journey, one line stuck out to us immediately: “Darks descends but light unending shines through the night.” Through both of our college experiences we have had experiences that have taught us that there will come a time when we are apart. Unfortunately, we will not always have Sunday Mass in the Loft and Folk Choir dinners to turn to. Just as we have learned this lesson, the entire world is learning how to cultivate community when we cannot be closer than 6ft from each other. In a time when many of us are filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and grief, there is no song that is better to listen to than “Day is Done”. This song reminds us that even through all the hectic moments, the hardships, and unpredictable things that life throws at us, the day will end. The sun will set, the moon will rise, and we will rest. Right now our world is waiting for the resolution of the song. We are waiting for that moment when God’s unending light will start to shine through. If the two of us have learned anything in our roles, though, it is that whether you pastor to a flock of 60 or to a flock of 8,000, at the end of the day the purpose of our days are the same: to love each and every person right in front of us. It is through that love that we remind ourselves of God’s presence. This is the essence of “Day is Done”. The dark may seem all consuming right now but God’s radiance, love, and mercy will shine through, and it will do so in the love and care that we show to those around us. So in this strange world we find ourselves in, let us live with love, grace, and mercy, and remind ourselves that this day will end, the night will pass, and God’s eternal light will continue to shine.

1. Day is done, but love unfailing
Dwells ever here;
Shadows fall, but hope prevailing,
Calms ev'ry fear.
Loving Father, none forsaking,
Take our hearts, of love's own making,
Watch our sleeping, guard our waking,
Be always near.
2. Dark descends, but light unending
Shines through our night;
You are with us, ever lending
New strength to sight:
One in love, your truth confessing,
One in hope of heaven's blessing,
May we see, in love's possessing,
Love's endless light!
3. Eyes will close, but you, unsleeping,
Watch by our side;
Death may come, in love's safekeeping
Still we abide.
God of love, all evil quelling,
Sin forgiving, fear dispelling,
Stay with us, our hearts indwelling,
This eventide.
