Iran: Tehran set for very different Ramadan amid coronavirus pandemic

As Tajrish Bazaar reopened earlier this week, shoppers at the Tehran market appeared cautious about buying amid the coronavirus pandemic, as footage filmed on Friday indicates.

Many shopkeepers complained that the day was far less profitable than usual, saying customers were less willing to buy unpacked products and more careful about the date of food packaging, with many preferring to buy produce packaged before the emergence of COVID-19.

"This year's sales of most shops are incomparable with previous years. I have been in this bazaar for 40 years and I haven't seen anything like this before. It is clear that it will become worse during Ramadan," said store owner Amir.

Before the coronavirus outbreak, mosques provided people with Iftar, the meal which ends the daily Ramadam fast at sunset. Gatherings of the faithful are now banned to curb the spread of the virus, with worshippers set to undertake Ramadan observances at home.

Iran has 87,026 confirmed cases and 5,481 deaths as of Friday, according to the latest data released by the Johns Hopkins University.
