Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips says he is "in full recovery mode" after undergoing surgery to remove cancerous tissue from his colon.

In a video message on Tuesday, the People's National Party (PNP) president revealed that doctors discovered "an anomaly" during his routine medical examination a few weeks ago and decided to move rapidly "particularly because the COVID crisis was upon us as a country".

He also thanked well-wishers for their kind thoughts during what he described as a difficult time.

"I feel the goodwill and the love, and I want to say thank you very much for your prayers and your good thoughts," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, a statement from Phillips' medical team revealed that a health evaluation of Phillips by University Hospital of the West Indies Professor, Terrence Forrester, and Consultant Surgeon, Dr. Mark Newnham, resulted in "a diagnosis of stage 3 curable colon cancer."

Phillips will need further preventative treatment in the form of chemotherapy over the next few months, as an outpatient, while he continues his public duties, stated the release.

"Phillips’ medical and surgical teams are optimistic of complete remission based on the worldwide experience of managing this stage," the release said, adding that the Leader of the Opposition will remain on leave for the next two weeks.

In the meantime, the PNP in a statement said officers of the party were briefed on Tuesday by the medical and surgical teams attending to Phillips.

"The party officers said they fully understood and supported the doctors’ position of not making a public statement before completing their testing and evaluation regime, and are imploring all Jamaicans to support Dr. Phillips’ need for privacy to this time as he enters the next phase of recuperation," the release stated.

"The PNP officers are also assuring PNP members and supports that during the next two weeks, while the president is on leave, regular party activities, permissible within the COVID-19, will proceed apace and the party will continue to play it part in ensuring compliance with the national emergency."
