Biology Lesson 7 - Can We Prevent Invisible Stuff From Becoming Visible By Boiling?

Biology Lesson 7 - Can We Prevent Invisible Stuff From Becoming Visible By Boiling? Introduction:
These videos are intended to teach primary-aged Montessori students (age 2.7-6 years) science by doing experiments that show, step by step, how to figure out important questions (i.e. the method of "induction").

In Lesson 6 ("When We Make Stuff Invisible, Does it Look the Same When It Becomes Visible Again?" we saw that we made green-gray fuzzy stuff invisible on a toothpick, then touched the toothpick to new Potato Sucrose Agar and Potato Sucrose Broth, we saw the same green-gray fuzzy stuff grow! Can we prevent that growth? If, after we make the green-gray fuzzy stuff invisible and touch it to new Potato Sucrose Broth, we boil the medium, does the fuzzy stuff still become visible?

Materials
"media" from Lesson 5 Prep
toothpicks and/or q-tips
growth from any of the previous lessons

Procedure:
*Note: I once again tried to do science before having coffee; I checked my recipe before starting the pressure cooker and realized we'd probably added a bit too much sugar, so I added another 1/4 cup of water to the Potato Sucrose Agar dishes (the agar should still be enough to form a nice solid). You'll also see that I added some Potato Sucrose Broth (same recipe, just without the agar) in mason jars.
1. Touch a toothpick to anything from any out of previous experiments that started out invisible and grew.
2. Make sure you can't see anything on the toothpick.
3. Touch to the toothpick to one jar of media.
4. Touch the toothpick to the same growth.
5. Again, make sure you can't see anything on the toothpick.
6. Touch the toothpick to a second jar of media.
7. Boil or pressure cook one of the two jars of media for 20 minutes.
8. Leave the second jar of media somewhere out of the way (like the basement).
9. Once the boiled jar is done cooking, place it next to the other jar of media.
10. Check back with us in a few days!
