Director Chloe Zhao and star Frances McDormand adapt Jennifer Bruder's nonfiction account of life among traveling unhoused American drifters traveling the country for subsistence jobs and their own other myriad personal reasons; focusing on McDormand's enigmatic Fern and her encounters with fellow travelers - including some real subjects from Bruder's reporting, portraying semi-autiobiographical versions of themselves. As the details of exactly what circumstances did (and didn't) bring Fern to this point in her life, and what it is exactly she's trying to find on the road, come more clearly into focus; audiences are treated to a stark and melancholy view of landscapes at once alien and familiar in a quietly powerful yet modest indie road drama that manages to seize the zeitgeist of the moment without leaning too far into it's prospective "Grapes of Wrath 2020" heaviness.
