Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe A family living in the city of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip has begun making decorative lanterns for the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan after realising there would be a shortage due to import restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Footage filmed on Tuesday at the Al-Yaqoubi home, shows all members of the family teaming up to make the decorative lanterns, as they make productive use of their time amid the COVID-19 lockdown. Traces of fabric being cut with templates as others glue the pieces together are seen in the pictures.
Mohammed Al-Yaqoubi, who praised his wife and children's skill in making the lanterns explained: “we agreed to receive the month of Ramadan by investing this time in a positive thing, so that everyone has a specific role in making Ramadan lanterns and decorating the house in which we live.”
“The goal of making lanterns is not just trade. Every year we decorate the house. This year, conditions have changed since I was informed by merchants and shop owners that importing from the crossings is very difficult since they are closed because of the spread of coronavirus throughout the world,” he added.
Lanterns made by the Al-Yaqoubi family are purportedly sold for around 20 shekels ($5,60; €5.20) apiece.
“It was agreed with the owners of the shops who bought the lanterns from us, that the price traded to all would be low and available to all of our Palestinian people because of our economic conditions," said Mohammed.
